In this column, I share my 10 favorite movies of 2016 -- one year late:
One of my favorite parts of the year as a pop culture/entertainment-loving soul is to consume and put together my own end-of-year “best” lists. I love reflecting on the year that was, and I take a sick joy pitting films against each other that really have nothing in common. These ordered lists are arbitrary but endlessly fun.
The thing is, some of the best films tend to come out around the same time that we have to write our lists, so it can be hard to be circumspect about what films really will stick in our memories and hearts in the coming weeks.
That’s why today, in advance of my own upcoming 2017 “top 10 films” list, I have newly revised my list of the best movies from 2016. I loved “La La Land,” but upon further reflection — and after catching up with some films earlier this year that I had missed — I was surprised to see it land just shy of my re-evaluated list. (It would definitely be No. 11!) Looks like 2017 really is the year of “La La Land” continually falling just short.
