I wrote a feature on the Grassroots Shakespeare Festival summer tour:
Sometimes the most subversive thing you can do is mine from the deepest traditions you have.
In English-speaking theater, it doesn’t get more traditional than Shakespeare. But for the Utah-based Grassroots Shakespeare Company, mining from the deepest traditions has created a blast from the past that is so fresh, it can sometimes be hard to describe.
“We've had a lot of people say before that the energy at a Grassroots show is more like a rock concert or a sporting event than your average theatrical event,” Alex Ungerman, one of the founders of the company, said. “I think that’s true.”
