Shakespeare’s “King Lear” opens on a scene of father -- the titular king -- doling out the kingdom to his three daughters, on the condition that they heap him with loving verbal praise. Cordelia, who loves him most, refuses to speak in hyperbole, and is banished, while her two sisters manipulate their way to more power.
