'"South Pacific" tugs at racial tensions in color-blind SCERA production'
I wrote a feature on "The Little Mermaid" at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre:
In 1949, Broadway founding fathers Rodgers and Hammerstein proposed a then-controversial answer to the question of where prejudice comes from in their musical “South Pacific.” It was summed up by the title of one of the show’s songs: “You've Got to Be Carefully Taught.”
“You've got to be taught before it's too late,” the song says, “before you are 6 or 7 or 8 / To hate all the people your relatives hate. / You've got to be carefully taught.”
